1 Day Tactical Casualty Management / Wilderness Medicine Course Level I

The course is designed as an introduction to basic emergency medicine and its tactical application. It will cover everything from field expedient CPR to initial emergency treatment of penetrating chest trauma.
Our goal is to provide every student with a basic understanding of basic and emergent situations and the appropriate treatments.
Focus will be on:
-The maintenance of the airway thru the use of manual/artificial airways

-The treatment of major breathing injuries including treatment of gun shot and stab wounds in the chest with the use of occlusive dressings.
-The treatment and management of life threating/severe bleeding thru the use of pressure dressings, hemostatic agents, and tourniquets.

Course Outline
ININTIAL PATIENT ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT
Primary Survey

  • The primary survey usually involves treating numerous casualties.
  • Procedures performed are for rapid life saving interventions.

Primary Survey Steps 

  • Area Security- ensure the area is secure before performing care.
  • Scene Size Up- quick analysis of the scene to determine what type of injuries to expect.
  • Determine Patients Responsiveness/AVPU Method.
  • Airway Assessment and Management
  • Breathing Assessment and Management
  • Circulation Assessment and Management  
 

SECONDARY SURVEY AND TRIAGE
Secondary Survey

  • The secondary survey involves the identify and treatment all non-life threatening injuries not previously identified on the primary survey.
  • Systematic evaluation of the patient from head to toe utilizing visual signs and palpation.
  • As injuries are identified, proper treatment is rendered.
  • Typically performed after all threats have been controlled.

LEVEL I COURSES FEATURES SECTIONS FOCUSING ON:

  • Airway Injuries- Opening the airway, emergency airways, rescue breathing.
  • Chest Injuries- Identifying pneumothorax and Treating penetrating trauma including stab wounds and gun shot wounds with the use of occlusive dressings and needle decompression.
  • Hemorrhage Control- Identifying live threatening Bleeding and controlling it with the use of pressure dressing, tourniquets, and hemostatic agents.
  • Tactical Orthopedics- splinting, immobilization, and reduction of dislocations.
  • Environmental Injuries- heat injuries, cold injuries, snake/insect bites, and dive medicine
  • Casualty Assessment- AVPU Method, CPR, and Evacuation of Casualty

Requirements:
-No previous medical experience required
-Please wear loose comfortable clothing.
-All other Equipment will be provided by SOTS






We utilize realistic moulage and trained actors on every course in order accurately portray the injuries and add realism to all training.
